Lionel is one of the most popular and widely respected young saxophonists in the DC-Baltimore area. He leads quartets and quintets and has recorded three albums with them. He regularly performs with the top jazz players in the region. In 2016, Lionel won Best New Jazz Tenor Saxophonist as well as Best Performing Artist across all genres awarded by the Washington City Paper. In 2015, he won a “Jazzy” for Best Jazz Tenor Saxophonist awarded by the Jazz Journalists Association.
Lionel was born in Boulder, Colorado and currently lives in Baltimore. He has a music education degree from Morgan State University and a Master of Music degree in Jazz Saxophone Performance from North Carolina Central University, where he studied with such jazz icons such as Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Jimmy Heath, Roy Hargrove, Brian Horton, Robert Trowers and Dr. Ira Wiggins.
