Hi-Fi Night School Year Three – Global Studies
NOW ON JULY 17th Join us as Global Studies continues with its third session, exploring music and cultures navigating periods of complexity and change. Set within our dedicated listening space, each gathering invites audiences to engage with music not just as sound, but as story, history, and shared human experience.
This next installment welcomes Elliot and Lucas of Pop Overbite Records, the Los Angeles-based record shop known for its passion for musical discovery and global cultural storytelling. Rather than focusing on familiar collector favorites, Pop Overbite champions rare and overlooked sounds from around the world, spanning genres and traditions that connect listeners to diverse histories and communities.
As always, proceeds from the evening will benefit local school’s music programs.
Session Three – Romania featuring Pop Overbite Records
For this program, Pop Overbite will guide audiences through the rich history of Romanian music, exploring folk traditions, popular recordings, and experimental works shaped by the country’s evolving political and cultural landscape. From village ballads to post-socialist reinventions, the selections reveal how music has served as a powerful tool for preserving identity, documenting change, and fostering cultural connection.
Founded by Lucas Lyndes and Elliot Thompson, Pop Overbite began in 2018 as an Instagram project dedicated to sharing music from around the world before evolving into the record store and cultural platform it is today. Through their travels, DJ sets, radio programs, and ongoing research, they continue to uncover and share remarkable musical stories from across the globe.
Part celebration and part ethnomusicological exploration, this listening session highlights the enduring role of music as a living record of history; one that sustains tradition, documents transformation, and strengthens connections across Romania, Eastern Europe, and beyond. Through Pop Overbite’s thoughtful curation, audiences will experience Romanian music not simply as entertainment, but as a vibrant archive of resilience, heritage, and cultural exchange.
