Vines in Saint-Germain-des-Prés - Ile-de-France, France
  • Anywhere

EXPERIENCE:

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is the cultural and artistic heartland of Paris, with a history that spans centuries. The once powerful Abbey Saint-Germain-des-Prés was one of the largest wine producers in the Middle Ages with vineyards stretching as far south as Fontainebleau. It would be a stretch to call the vines that are planted in the little park next to the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés a vineyard, but their presence connects us to the medieval gardens and the fields that once surrounded the church.

This walk takes us through the wine history of Paris as we stroll through the streets where the Abbey Saint-Germain-des-Prés once stood. Along the way we evoke the spirits of the painters, philosophers, writers, musicians, and poets who once inhabited the quarter – Simone de Beauvoir, Sartre, Miles Davis, Billy Holiday, Ingres, Colette, Wagner, Jim Morrison and Baudelaire.

Our walk ends in the Marché Saint-Germain-des-Prés with an in-depth wine and cheese tasting.
