Seward was founded in 1903 and named for William H. Seward, the United States Secretary of State who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. The town grew rapidly as a key port and access point for the Railroad. from Alaska.

1. Kenai Fjords National Park:
The park is famous for its glaciers, wildlife and spectacular landscapes. You can take boat trips to see glaciers and wildlife such as whales, seals and seabirds up close.

2. Alaska Marine Center:
This research and rehabilitation center offers interactive exhibits about the marine life of the Gulf of Alaska. It’s a great place to learn about conservation efforts and see rescued marine animals.

3. Mount Marathon:
With an elevation of 3,000 feet, Mount Marathon is known for America’s oldest trail race, held every July 4. The view from the top is impressive and offers a panoramic view of Seward and Resurrection Bay.

4. Resurrection Bay Trail:
A scenic trail that offers stunning views of the coast, glaciers and mountains. It is ideal for walking and cycling.

5. Port of Seward:
A bustling fishing port where you can watch fishermen unloading their daily catch. It is also the starting point for many boat tours.

William H. Seward: The Alaska Purchase was often mocked, calling it “Seward’s Folly.” However, today it is recognized as one of the most valuable acquisitions in the United States.

Climate: Seward has a temperate maritime climate, meaning it experiences cool summers and mild winters compared to interior Alaska.

Good Friday Disaster: In 1964, Seward was devastated by the Alaska earthquake, the most powerful recorded in North America, and the subsequent tsunami. The city has rebuilt and prospered since then.

Northern Lights: Although less frequent than in interior Alaska, the Northern Lights are visible in Seward during the winter.

Ice Tunnel: In Kenai Fjords National Park, you can explore the ice tunnels formed by glaciers, a unique experience.

Indigenous Culture: Before the arrival of Europeans, the region was inhabited by the Alutiiq, an indigenous people who have a rich culture and heritage.
