To get to the first level you can either take an elevator or climb the stairs. At this level, you will see the ornate details of the inside of the dome whilst overlooking the Vatican City. Following that, if you are up for the challenge, you can climb 300 more steps to the top of the dome, with the views over the city making the effort worthwhile.
