Rome: Religious Life Trastevere Walking Tour - Rome, Italy

EXPERIENCE:

Our Religious Life Trastevere Walking Tour is a 3-hour trek around some of the most beautiful parts of Rome, perfect for those who like to experience a city break on foot. With panoramic photo ops aplenty, we’ll wander through Rome’s medieval city and pay visits to the numerous churches and other ecclesiastic buildings we see along the way.

We’ll seek out unknown treasures as well as several extremely well-known ones, with time along the way to contemplate the life’s work of people such as St Benedict and its effect on western civilisation.

We begin our tour at St Anselm on the Aventine, a small, inner-city complex containing an eponymous church, abbey, ecclesiastical college and pontifical university. Immediately after that, we’ll partake in the more touristy tradition of peeking through the famous Keyhole of the Knights of Malta, were we’ll catch our first glimpse of a magnificent surprise.

We’ll then take in the Basilicas of St Alexis and St Sabina before visiting Rome’s famed Orange Garden. Santa Sabina, in particular, is famous for its typically understated design, reflecting the true nature of monastic life. The Orange Garden meanwhile, is one of Rome’s most romantic spots and again features a fantastic panoramic photo op with its view of St Peter’s.

Before crossing the River Tiber we’ll also make some quick stops at more of Rome’s famous landmarks, for no other reason than the fact they’re on our route! Circus Maximus is one of the oldest sites in Rome, while the Mouth of Truth is a popular place of pagan legend.

Less well known than the Mouth of Truth is the church in whose portico it is located, St Mary in Cosmedin. A stunning example of Byzantine architecture, this characteristic church also hides a secret treasure for pilgrims!

On we roam on our marathon Religious Life Walking Trastevere Tour with a hop, a skip and a jump across the river, but not before stopping halfway at the Tiber Island, where we’ll pop into St Bartholomew on the Island and see one of the most famous and important hospitals in Italy, the Vatican-run Fatebenefratelli.

As lunchtime approaches we enter the vibrant and historical neighbourhood of Trastevere, where we’ll first of all visit the home of St Benedict himself during his short sojourn in Rome in the 5th century, now a church in his name.

Finally our tour nears its conclusion with visits to two of Rome’s better-known basilicas, St Cecilia and Santa Maria in Trastevere. Curated by Benedictine nuns, the former is dedicated to the 3rd century martyr and contains her relics and archaeological excavations from her home. Santa Maria in Trastevere meanwhile, is one of the oldest churches in Christendom and is home to one of the relics of Christ’s Passion.

Our tour ends in the heart of olde-world Trastevere, where you’ll be perfectly in the mind for a fine taste of la cucina Romana!
