EXPERIENCE

This full-day excursion begins in Salta, but the tour actually starts when you arrive in Purmamarca village. Admire the 7-colored hill, the church and the craft market on the square, as you take a brief walk along its narrow streets.

Next on the itinerary is the town of Tilcara, where you ll visit the ancient ruins and the archaeological museum. As you continue on you ll cross the Tropic of Capricorn and take in views of the colors of La Pollera de la Coya.

Visit Uquía and its church, where the paintings of the Arcabuceros Angels are housed. You ll arrive in Humahuaca at around noon. This town has an important church as well as an independence monument by the sculptor Soto Avendaño.

After a stop for lunch you ll drive past La Paleta del Pintor, framing the town of Maimara. Proceed to San Salvador de Jujuy, where you ll see the Flag Hall and visit the Cathedral, with its pulpit of carved wood and gold and the statues of Lola Mora.

The return to Salta is by National Route 9 in the midst of abundant subtropical vegetation. The final stretch of the drive takes you by El Abra of Santa Laura, La Cienaga dam, Las Maderas and Campo Alegre.
