Puglia: Private Minervino Murge Tour - Apulia, Italy
  • Anywhere

EXPERIENCE:

This guided tour of Minervino will start with your discovery of a precious village, where there are numerous monuments. You will encounter such sights as the Lombard-Norman Baronial Palace (with a neoclassical facade), and the castle (now the Town Hall), whose oldest part dates back to the eleventh century.

The tour continues towards the lighthouse, built in 1932 and dedicated to the victims of the war. From its particular position, you will be able to admire the panorama from the Vulture Volcano (Basilicata), to the Gargano mountain (Puglia).

Leaving the lighthouse behind you, you will enter the historic center called “Scesciola” (because of its narrow streets where you can easily lose yourself). You will visit the cathedral, the ancient Duomo of the village (and the bishop’s seat for six centuries), built under the Norman domination. You will also encounter the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, the Church of Purgatory (commissioned in the 15th century by the Prince of Minervino), and the Church of San Michele.

Just outside the village, at the end of a valley where once a small river ran, the tour will end with a visit to the Cave of St. Michael Archangel. This is a beautiful site which dates back to 1000 A.D., thanks to a parchment found in the Abbey of Montecassino.
