Peaks of the Balkans: Theth, Valbona & Koman Lake in 5 days – Shkoder County, Albania

EXPERIENCE

Day 1 Tirana / Shkodra – Theth National Park – Blue Eye – Theth
Embark on an early morning journey to the Albanian Alps from Tirana or Shkodra.
After a refreshing break, we hike to the Blue Eye mid-day, a 3-hour trek (6.2 km round trip, 700 m elevation). This moderate trail showcases the vivid blue and green hues of this natural wonder, formed by Alpine snowmelt. Return to Theth to visit the Old Church and “Lock in” Tower, steeped in centuries of history, before overnighting in a Traditional Guest House.

Day 2 Theth – Grunas Waterfall – Theth
Hike from Theth to Grunas Waterfall, a scenic route passing Kullas and local village life. The waterfall, declared a natural monument, offers a breathtaking cascade over grey rocks. Return to Theth by midday for an afternoon exploring the National Park independently.

Day 3 Theth National Park – Valbona Pass – Valbona Valley National Park
Get ready to hike from Theth to Valbona, a 6 to 8-hour journey through remote terrain to Valbona Pass. Revel in adrenaline-pumping views of the Balkan Peaks and “Accursed Mountains,” perfect for memorable photos. Descend to Valbona Valley for an overnight stay in a traditional guesthouse.

Day 4 Valbona Valley – “Primaida 18” – Valbona Valley
Today we will to “Piramida 18” on the Montenegrin-Albanian border, standing 2000m above sea level. This 15 km round-trip trek offers a 360° panorama of the Accursed Mountains. Enjoy a picnic lunch amidst this stunning scenery before descending to Valbona Valley for another night.

Day 5 Day 5 Valbona Valley – Komani Lake – Shkoder or Tirana
We start the day with a scenic boat ride on Komani Lake, famed for its views of the Albanian Alps, waterfalls, and rural villages. Once arriving in the Komani dam we will experience local transport over bumpy roads, however offering spectacular views of Vau i Dejes Lake. You will return home full of the wonders of Albania, with a new sense of self-excitement to share with those around you.
