Summary:
Discover the iconic buildings that make up the New York City skyline as well as its lesser-known architectural gems on this walking tour of Manhattan’s fabulous Flatiron District!

We’ll start out our tour at the neighborhood’s namesake, the bizarrely wedge-shaped Flatiron building. You’ll learn the storied history behind the building’s terracotta facade, the origins of its name, and its unusual relationship with the weather.

As we continue our tour along Fifth Avenue, your guide will point out the historic buildings that once gave this neighborhood the nickname “The Toy District”.

Several notable architectural marvels can be viewed from Madison Square Park, itself containing a fascinating history of development and past occupants, including the hand and torch of the Statue of Liberty!

Rising above the park trees, the original Met Life Tower still stands as a reminder of turn-of-the-century skyscrapers, having been the tallest building in the world until 1913! Equally eye-catching is the nearby New York Life Building, known for its gothic style and golden roof.

Your tour of the city’s engineering feats and iconic architectural landmarks wouldn’t be complete without the Art Deco masterpiece that carries the state’s moniker. You’ll learn all about the Empire State Building’s battle for the title of “world’s tallest building”, going up against another skyline beauty, The Chrysler Building.

Among the other green spaces nestled between the high rises and commercial buildings, Gramercy Park is unique in that only those with a key can access the exclusive two-acre grounds. You’ll hear who’s lucky enough to have entry and the notable people who once resided in the handsome townhouses surrounding the park.

Just a few blocks away, we’ll pass by another curious Flatiron landmark, the recreated brownstone where U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt spent his childhood years!

We’ll finish up our tour at Union Square, ringed by a mixture of historic commercial buildings and modern-day luxury condos. From here, you’re in the perfect place to continue exploring New York’s architecture, food and dining, and shopping scenes!
