Mexico City: Mexican Food and Its History Walking Tour – Mexico City, Mexico

EXPERIENCE:

Throughout the tour, you will visit different restaurants, shops, and a market to understand the influence of other cultures on Mexican gastronomy, such as Spanish, Chinese, French, and Arabic, among others.

Begin on a terrace overlooking the main Mexica (Aztec) temple, enjoying a mezcal cocktail while learning about pre-Hispanic gastronomy: what ingredients were used, what cooking utensils were available, which alcoholic drinks existed, and why insects were consumed.

You will learn about the transition from pre-Hispanic to colonial gastronomy with the arrival of many new European ingredients. As an example, you will taste quesadillas and flautas.
You will also visit a candy store from 1874 to taste sweets and candies made with original recipes from colonial times to the beginning of the 20th century.

To learn about the Independence era in Mexico, you will visit the president’s house from 1840, which today houses a restaurant, where you will taste chiles rellenos, a typical dish from the beginning of the 19th century.

You will visit an old cantina from 1876 to learn about the Mexico of the Porfiriato at the end of the 19th century, knowing about the French influence that arrived at that time. You will enjoy the place that remains the same since it was inaugurated while you drink a beer and taste some chipotle snails, a perfect example of the mix between Mexico and France.

You will taste tacos al pastor to learn about the Arab arrival in Mexico and the result of their influence on one of the most famous tacos in Mexico City.

Visiting a traditional cafeteria from 1940, you will learn about the Chinese influence with its famous “Chinese bread” and its contribution to the bread display cases on the facades of its restaurants.

In the San Juan market, you will taste typical Spanish tapas accompanied by some wine to understand the influence of the arrival of Spanish refugees during the civil war in the late 1930s.

You will finish this tour tasting pulques -natural and cured flavored- in a century-old pulqueria to imagine what revolutionary times were like in Mexico.

In addition, throughout the tour, you will listen to music from each era to which the dishes belong to set the mood and envelop another of your senses.
