Between 1835 and 1865, New Orleans became the 3rd largest city in the United States. The wealthiest city in the South, and the capital of slavery in the South. In the 1830s, just upriver above the city of New Orleans was the Faubourg Livaudais, which became better known as the Historic Garden District.

The Garden District was comprised of a close network of several plantations which were parceled, sold, and broken into smaller lots. These lots were home to various ethnic neighborhoods, including the American sector, the Irish Channel, and an elite Jewish community.

There was also a very large African American and Creole neighborhood adjacent to the others, all of which were part of the Historic Garden District.
