Genova: Basilica of Carignano, ascend and visit - Liguria, Italy
  • Anywhere

EXPERIENCE:

Planning for the basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption in Carignano, the only church in Genoa to have been built during the Renaissance, started in 1549 by architect Galeazzo Alessi for the noble Sauli family. Its position on the hill of Carignano makes it one of the most recognisable landmarks and the most spectacular panoramic viewpoint of the city. The monumental central-plan building is completed with a majestic dome supported by imposing pillars, in which are housed the impressive Baroque sculptures of French artist Pierre Puget.

Unravel the history of this gem of Genoese architecture and discover the one-of-a-kind layout of passageways that run through the basilica at roof level. From the top of the dome you will be able to retrace the evolution of the urban fabric of the city and admire a beautiful view over Genoa: a truly extraordinary experience stretching from the Lanterna (the lighthouse) to the Old Port, from the hinterland up until the point of Portofino.
