Fuerteventura Hiking up the holy mountain El Cardon - Canary Islands, Spain
  • Anywhere

EXPERIENCE

The first settlers had already discovered the 695 m high peak for themselves. One of the few springs emerges from the rock at 460 m above sea level.
In the past, these places were considered sacred, as the life of humans and animals was secured thanks to the spring. This is evidenced by the numerous bone finds from the area, which now provide information about a life long before the conquest of the island. The view as far as the southern tip of Punta Jandia and the magnificent view over the little-known hinterland is impressive. On a clear day, the southern peninsula of Jandia is clearly visible.

The destination of the hike is the chapel of the Virgin El Tanquito, which you reach after an hour. Carved into the volcanic rock, the small pilgrimage chapel at 460 m above sea level is a surprising sight. Every year at the beginning of June, the procession of the Virgin is organized here and hundreds of locals celebrate their saint.

On all other days of the year, hardly anyone uses the hiking trail, which is why this tour remains an insider tip for those seeking peace and quiet. Especially in the fall and winter months, you can always discover plants on the El Cardon mountain that are supplied with moisture by the clouds from the trade winds and offer unique contrasts.

The summit cannot be reached on this guided tour, as the last few meters consist of heavily weathered ground and there is no path.

Let your tour guide tell you the stories of this fascinating place and discover the beauty of the Holy Mountain El Cardon.

Visit the interesting rock chapel and enjoy a picnic in a small group with a maximum of 12 people.

The tour is suitable for participants aged 9 – 75. You do not need to have any off-road experience. A normal level of physical fitness is required, as you will be walking up and down a hiking trail.
Sturdy, closed shoes with a profile are important, as the ground is gravel.
