From Brindisi: Visit the Iconic Matera Living Nativity Scene – Apulia, Italy

EXPERIENCE:

The Living Nativity Scene of Matera is an extraordinary experience that brings to life the story of the nativity of Jesus Christ in a unique historical context. Located among the evocative Sassi of Matera, this event transports visitors back in time, immersing them in the traditions and atmosphere of ancient Bethlehem.

Local inhabitants dress in period costumes and play various characters from the nativity story, such as Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the Three Wise Men and the villagers carrying out daily activities. The narrow alleys and stone houses of the Sassi act as the perfect backdrop for this re-enactment, offering you a glimpse into the context and lifestyle of that era.

Living Nativity Scene 2024 Programm

The XIII edition of the Living Nativity in the Sassi of Matera this year entitled “THE NATIVITY OF ITALY: BREAD AND PEACE” will see the “Sassi of Matera” as the undisputed protagonists; the event will cover 4 km of route starting from the historic center crossing the Sasso Barisano and the Sasso Caveoso with over 200 presences including professional actors, extras, historical re-enactors and theater companies from all over Italy. The itinerary will touch on all the already known sights for having been the locations of numerous films that have consecrated Matera as the “Jerusalem of Southern Italy”, from Sasso Barisano up to Sasso Caveoso.

The project idea aims to bring together various artistic declinations in the format of the XIII edition of the Living Nativity : from the commemorative one (the Roman Empire in the Sasso Barisano with the scenes of the Castrum, the Gladiator School, the Domus, the Vestals recalling Judea 2000 years ago) to the figurative one (the participation of numerous figures who will give life to the scenes of market and ancient crafts) culminating in the theatrical one, the true characterizing element of this edition; the latter masterfully directed by Lucanian director Gianpiero Francese of Opera Prima. In fact, thanks to the presence of professional actors, the most exciting moments of the birth of Jesus will be staged, creating pathos and emotion.

Light games, videomapping and 3D projections will further enrich the event. This year’s performance contains two important words of hope and sharing in its title: “Bread and Peace” in memory of the beautiful Eucharistic message launched in Matera in occasion of the pastoral visit of the Holy Father Francis at the conclusion of the work of the XXVII National Eucharistic Congress.
