EXPERIENCE:

Experience the historic city of Benevento, from the Roman monuments to Lombard sites:

A local tour guide will meet you at the Rocca dei Rettori (Benevento Castle) giving you a welcome gift (shopping bag, map of the area, discount voucher in participating stores, souvenir gadgets) and a set of audio guides and earphones.

The Rocca dei Rettori: also known as Benevento Castle or Castle of Manfredi, was founded on the site of a previous fortified palace of the Lombards, built by Duke Arechi II from 871.

Then you’ll explore the Arcos Museum, located in the basement of the Government Palace, which houses a section of contemporary art and a rich section of Egyptian artifacts, all found on site and dating back to the cult of the goddess Isis, in whose honor, in Roman times, was erected a temple.

Afterwards, you’ll visit the Monumental Complex of Santa Sofia, which includes the church, one of the most important of Langobardia Minor arrived to this day, the bell tower in front of the square, the former monastery with the picturesque cloister, the fountain in the centre of the area. Since June 25, 2011 the Church of Santa Sofia, which is part of the serial site “The Lombards in Italy. The places of power (568 – 774 A.D.)”, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Guided tour will continue with the city’s most iconic monument: the Arch of Trajan. Built between 114 and 117 A.D., it was built to celebrate the figure of Emperor Trajan on the occasion of the inauguration of the Via Traiana, a variant of the Via Appia which shortened the path between Benevento and Brindisi.

In front of the Arch, you will find the deconsecrated church of Sant’Ilario a Port’Aurea, presumably of Longobard origin (VI-VII century), built on previous ruins.

Afterwards, time at your disposal to taste the famous confectionery products of the Strega Alberti company. End of services.
