The monastery complex dates back to the 10th century and is famous for its unique architecture and historical significance. The monastery was built during the reign of King Ashot III of the Bagratuni Dynasty and was initially known as Pghindzavank. However, it gained its current name, Akhtala, meaning “white fortress” in Armenian, due to the white stone used in its construction.

Alaverdi is a town in the Lori Province of Armenia, situated in the northern part of the country. It is known for its historical significance, particularly due to the presence of the Alaverdi Monastery and its association with the mining industry.

Sanahin Monastery is a medieval Armenian monastery complex located near the town of Alaverdi in the Lori Province of Armenia. Along with Haghpat Monastery, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its cultural and historical significance. Sanahin Monastery was founded in the 10th century during the reign of King Abas I of the Bagratuni Dynasty. The name “Sanahin” is derived from the Armenian phrase “?? ????,” meaning “this one is older than that one,” referring to its older construction compared to nearby Haghpat Monastery.
