A day trip to Sanahin and Haghpat monasteries in Armenia is a perfect way to explore the rich cultural and historical heritage of this beautiful country. The journey starts early in the morning, as you depart from the city of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.
Your first stop will be at the Alphabet Yard, located in the village of Artashavan. This is a unique open-air museum dedicated to the Armenian alphabet and its history. Here, you can learn about the creation of the Armenian alphabet, which dates back to the 5th century, and explore the various letters and their meanings.
Next, you’ll visit the Gntunik Bakery, located in the town of Alaverdi. This bakery is famous for its traditional Armenian bread, which is baked in a stone oven and has a distinct taste and texture. You can watch the bakers at work and even try some fresh bread straight out of the oven.
From there, you’ll head to the Yazidi Temple, located in the village of Aknalich. This temple is one of the few remaining places of worship for the Yazidi people, a religious-ethnic minority in Armenia . Here, you can learn about their beliefs and customs, and admire the beautiful architecture of the temple.
The next stop on your trip will be the Sanahin Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Lori Province of Armenia. This ancient monastery was founded in the 10th century and is known for its beautiful stone carvings, intricate khachkars (Armenian cross-stones), and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
Finally, you’ll visit the Haghpat Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site located just a few kilometers from Sanahin. This monastery was also founded in the 10th century and is known for its beautiful frescoes and intricate stone carvings. The monastery is located on a hill overlooking the Debed River, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
