Join us for our January 2025 technical lecture: Shorefront Park Living Shoreline – A Case Study for NNBF’s in NY.

For decades, New York State has relied on hardened shoreline structures like revetments, seawalls, and bulkheads to manage shoreline erosion and recession. However, with increasing storm intensities and frequencies, our local shorelines are being tested, putting adjacent lands and infrastructure at greater risk. Enter resilient shoreline design—a nature-based approach that adapts to climate change and offers renewed hope for shoreline management in coastal communities across New York.

Installed 2023, Shorefront Park’s Living Shoreline has demonstrated exceptional success and serves as a precedent for future shoreline management projects in New York. This presentation will recount the project’s major milestones, including master planning, grant funding, permitting, design and engineering, construction, and post-construction monitoring. Additionally, we will share insights from precedent-setting projects in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Course Instructor:

Carlos Vargas, RLA, CLARB, ISA – VHB

Carlos is a seasoned project manager and landscape architect with a broad background across multiple sectors, including state and local government, institutional, energy, real estate, and transportation. He brings a wealth of experience in planning, permitting, design, bid and construction administration, as well as the management of complex and diverse project types. His portfolio includes coastal resiliency and waterfront projects, natural resources management, design-build projects, highways, bridges, streetscapes, public parks, plazas, and land development.

Carlos is a Registered Landscape Architect in New York and New Jersey, a member of the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards, and an ISA Certified Arborist, offering consulting arborist project support in the areas of tree ordinance compliance, inventory and risk assessment, protection and preservation through construction, and construction impact mitigation.
