Beneath the Waves, the Fascinating Seafloor! Insights into Offshore Geotechnics

Bio: J. Carlos Santamarina (Professor and Clough Chair, Georgia Tech) earned his bachelor’s degree from the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and completed graduate studies at the University of Maryland and Purdue University. He has taught at NYU-Poly, the University of Waterloo (Canada), KAUST (Saudi Arabia), and Georgia Tech. His research team utilizes a combination of experimental and numerical methods to investigate sediments, fractured rocks and complex fluids, with applications to energy geotech and civil infrastructure. He delivered the 50th Terzaghi Lecture on Energy Geotechnology.

Abstract: We know other planets better than our oceans, yet the oceans are central to our survival. They host remarkable phenomena such as hydrothermal circulation, massive landslides, salt glaciers, stratified brine pools, seeps, gas-driven fractures, pockmarks, polygonal faults, pipes, chimneys, and submarine volcanoes. Some offshore sediments have unique origins and distinct characteristics -ranging from index properties to self-compaction, permeability, and stiffness- that affect geoacoustic properties, bioactivity, gas migration, and hydrate accumulation. Characterization and monitoring present unique challenges for both researchers and engineers. Recent advancements in site characterization and process monitoring include enhanced geophysical interpretation, multiphysics probes, pressure cores, lab-on-a-bench technology and distributed seafloor observatories. A renewed understanding of seafloor sediments is essential to addressing emerging engineering challenges related to sea-level rise, coastal erosion, offshore foundations, and deep-sea mining.
