Pregnant? Don’t want to be? This alternative to Inauguration Day demonstrates why Roe vs. Wade is worth fighting for, both then and now.

Fat Theatre Project and Violet Surprise Theatre Company are proud to partner for this staged reading of JANE: Abortion and the Underground, written by Paula Kamen and directed by Iris Sowlat.

This documentary-style play is based on interviews with women and their allies who used and ran this legendary underground abortion service, serving more than 10,000 Chicago women from 1969 to 1972. Today, in a post-Roe America, their story inspires, showing the power of feminist organizing and resistance. It also gives insight into how illegal abortion can still be harrowing for pregnant people, even under the most ideal of circumstances, and the importance of keeping it legal not only in Illinois, but in the United States.

Itinerary

Doors to the space open at 3:00PM, where we are excited to host our Femme Market of local, women-owned businesses! All who donate are welcome to explore an array of clever, creative, beautiful wares before the show.

Looking for more conversation to be part of? A series of talks will be available to attend as part of your ticket leading up to the show. Program to be confirmed.

Our staged reading begins promptly at 7:00PM. After the show, audience members are welcome to engage in a talkback, or unwind with a number of Cozy Corner options that offer spaces for self-care and self-regulation.

We are proud and excited to share the proceeds of the evening’s event with two organizations seeking to preserve women’s health.

The Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF) boldly affirms a person’s right to bodily autonomy. They provide financial, logistical, and emotional support to people seeking abortion care in Chicago, in Illinois, and the Midwest.

Planned Parenthood was founded over 100 years ago on the revolutionary idea that women have the right to access the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives. Today, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund (Action Fund) fights to protect that right.

The production team, playwright, and performers are staging this production as an act of volunteerism in the name of healthcare and abortion access for all.
