Urban Ecology Walk ~ the Lessons of the LA River & our LA Fire Future – Los Angeles, CA

Don’t miss this upcoming event in Los Angeles, CA. Happening on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at Elysian Valley Gateway Park. Doors open at 5:00 PM.

With this fire disaster, I think LA River is the perfect classroom to show us what *not* to do after a disaster, and how we can do better.

I am heartbroken by the ongoing devastation in our city, but I’m also hopeful that a better future can grow from the ashes.

One way we can do that is to learn from our past mistakes and use those lessons to advocate for a better future. I happen to think the Los Angeles River is one of the best classrooms for this very lesson.

Join us to talk about the LA River history of dissaster, the poor choices our leaders made in their attempt to rebuild, a hopeful future that we are all pushing to replant, and how we can use all this to inform and advocate for better decision making in the aftermath of the LA Fires.

We wil also be able to enjoy the peace that nature provides in a safe space, along the babbling banks of the River, and down in to the bottom of the River (which is still safe to access because we haven’t had any rain, sadly). We should encounter some great blue and night herons, possibly and owls or two, and a gaggle of over 200 geese that come from around the city to congregrate in the River every night.

**AIR QUALITY: I know there are many questions about the quality of LA’s air right now, even with the sky appears clear. N95 masks will be available and are encouraged. I will be monitoring every air and water quality report possible to ensure our safety.

**DONATION ITEMS: I’ll be collecting any donation items prior to the event at our meeting up spot. That means I’ll wait in line to drop them off for you, and we don’t add to the traffic at distribution centers. Here is what they are looking for the most:

There is an overwhelming volume of clothing items. NO clothing donations please.

  1. Cardboard Boxes or Plastic Bins: This helps community members pick up more items.
  2. Hygiene Items: Shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable wipes, etc.
  3. Shoes: All types of shoes, including working boots, walking shoes, adult and children shoes, etc.
  4. Non-perishable Food: canned foods, dried fruits, granola bars, peanut butter, etc.
  5. Water: cases and gallons
