Winter will melt away in the heat of New Orleans jazz, Chicago-style jazz, and some classics from the Great American Songbook.

THE HADACOL BOUNCERS will perform in concert at the Phippsburg Congregational Church on Sunday, January 12 at 3:00 p.m. Winter will melt away in the heat of New Orleans jazz, Chicago-style jazz, and some classics from the Great American Songbook.

Among other things you’ll hear great songs by Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and James P. Johnson. Featuring a classic line-up of piano, banjo, upright bass, drums, cornet, clarinet and trombone, the players are all veterans of the style.

The seasoned performers include:

Tom Whitehead (piano, vocals and guitar) A fixture on the Maine jazz scene, Tom co-founded the Fogcutters Big Band of Portland and is also a practitioner of the style of New Orleans piano put forth by players such as Professor Longhair, Dr. John, James Booker and Henry Butler. He has a background in blues, New Orleans R & B and Bebop piano, and also plays swing rhythm guitar.

Peter Dunphy (banjo, guitar and vocals) Also a member of the Bellamy Jazz Band, Peter has been playing New Orleans and Chicago style jazz since he was fourteen.

Dave Ellis (drums) Is a 35 year veteran of the Southern Maine musical scene. A master of many styles, he has been a first call drummer for numerous bands and has shared the stage with renowned jazz greats.

Kris Day (upright bass) In addition to fronting his own band, King Day and his New Imperials, Kris has done a considerable amount of touring, including performances with rock and roll legends Link Wray, Dale Hawkins, Ronnie Dawson and Joe Clay.

Ray Sapirstein (cornet) is a veteran player from New York who has performed and recorded extensively for more than 30 years, having studied with Jimmie Maxwell who played with Benny Goodman and Peggy Lee.

Nat Balch (clarinet) Nat started playing improvisational jazz as a teen and later played with the Memorial Bridge All-Stars. He has studied the styles of numerous jazz performers, including Sidney Bechet, Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Hamilton, Paul Desmond and Clark Terry.

Dr. Barney Balch (trombone) Barney began his jazz career in Boston in the mid-1970’s with Craig Ball, Dave McMillan and Jimmy Mazzy. In 1978 he began performing with veteran stride pianist, Bob Page and the Downeast Jazz Babies. He has studied with the Kansas City blues trombonist, Jimmy Cheatham, a veteran of Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton,and Thad Jones orchestras. Barney also leads the Novel Jazz Septet, “mining” original manuscripts from the Duke Ellington Collection at the Smithsonian and Strayhorn Collection at the Library of Congress and performing them in concerts around New England.
