Join us for a delightful afternoon at the “Cheers for Chairs: Brunch and Silent Auction,” a unique fundraising event dedicated to supporting DeGullah Shipp’s mission to empower and preserve the Gullah Geechee community on historic St. Helena Island.

The highlight of the event will be a silent auction featuring stunning works of art created by both local and visiting artists. These talented individuals have transformed all types of chairs—from standard seating to rocking chairs, benches, and stools—into extraordinary pieces of art. Each chair tells its own story, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and creativity of our community.

Our Mission:
DeGullah Shipp is committed to creating a village-oriented program that reinvigorates our cultural past while reconstructing the present and future of the Gullah Geechee communities. We aim to bridge generational gaps between the youth, their families, and the communities on St. Helena Island.

Our Vision:
We envision a future where the voices of our community are amplified, and lives are innovated through science, technology, engineering, roots, economics, language & literacy, preservation of the environment, well-being, arts, and mathematics.

The need for our work is clear. St. Helena Island’s community is served by three elementary schools, where over 1,000 students—primarily Black and Latinx—struggle with academic performance, particularly in reading and English Language Arts. The impact of the pandemic has widened achievement gaps, especially among our youngest learners.

Additionally, as development, gentrification, and the climate crisis continue to threaten our cultural landscapes, our commitment to cultural and environmental sustainability becomes even more critical. Your support will help us protect the Gullah Geechee heritage through environmental resilience, capacity building, and bridging educational and generational gaps.
