Mile High JACL

Mochitsuki is the Japanese tradition of pounding rice to make mochi, a sweet sticky rice cake that has been a staple of Japanese food since around 800 CE. Mochi is often prepared around the New Year in hopes of bringing good fortune over the coming year. It involves pounding hot rice in an usu (mortar) with a kine (wooden mallet), an involved process that requires several people at once. Often festivals around mochitsuki can involve families or an entire community.

Mile High JACL is proud to host a community mochitsuki here in Denver. All are welcome to attend. All donations received will go to the Mile High JACL’s scholarship fund for high schoolers.
