Naples: the Upside Down tour of the underground city – Naples, Italy

EXPERIENCE:

According to the local vulgate Naples is the city of Sun. Notwithstanding, Naples has a dense network of underground spaces with a millenary history. This perhaps helps to explain the locals bright and vital character, but at the same time their vicinity and fascination for death.
Our tour will unfold following this contrasted line: on one side, the messy, noisy, chaotic streets of Naples. On the other side, the silence and dark atmospheres of its Upside Down.
We will meet in sunny Piazza Dante, and we will access the ancient historic center’s small alleys, passing next to iconic landmarks among street musicians and noisy sellers. Our first stop will be the Church of the Souls of Purgatorium, where we will learn about the odd cult of the poor souls and we will observe from close an underground church and its intimate cemetery.
Few meters away, the busy San Gregorio Armeno street is repleted with the traditional shops of clay statues used for Presepe, the Christmas Crib scene. Just next to this open air artesanry exhibition lies the Church of San Lorenzo. This can be considered the heart of the ancient city, and in its womb we can still observe the ruins of the city as it was 2000 years ago. We will have the chance of seeing a small portion of the city with its shops, fisheries, cistern and school, all covered by the modern city.
We will then proceed to the northern gate of the medieval city, to reach the animated Vergini neighbourhood, a chaotic open air market full of life. A couple of hundred meters away lies one of the most unique archaeological finds of the Greek civilization: underground chamber tombs with still traces of colour 2500 years old. We will sink once more into the undergrounds to visit this stunning little gem.
