Untrue Unreal, dedicated and realized in collaboration with the celebrated master who has revolutionized the concept of sculpture in contemporary art. The exhibition offers an evocative journey through monumental installations, immersive environments, and provocative forms, creating an original and engaging connection between Anish Kapoor’s art, the audience, and Renaissance architecture.
Through historical and recent works, including a new production conceived in dialogue with the Renaissance courtyard’s architecture, the exhibition represents an opportunity to directly engage with Kapoor’s art. Palazzo Strozzi becomes a place that is both concave and convex, whole and fractured simultaneously, where visitors are called upon to question their senses amidst empty and full spaces, absorbent and reflective surfaces, geometric and biomorphic forms.
Among the exhibited works, you’ll encounter Svayambhu (2007), a monumental block of red wax that shapes its formless matter in relation to the traversing architecture, the Non-Object Black series, featuring the famous Vantablack black pigment capable of absorbing over 99.9% of visible light, and mirror sculptures like Vertigo (2006) or Mirror (2018) that reflect and deform, reduce and multiply the surrounding space, drawing the viewer into the indefinite space they emit. In a world where reality seems increasingly elusive and manipulable, Anish Kapoor challenges us to seek truth beyond appearances, inviting us to explore the realm of the unlikely and unreal, untrue and unreal.
