BIO:

The Harvey Diamond Trio is known for eloquent and completely spontaneous performances of familiar jazz standards. There is no set list or written music. The music all happens in the moment as these three virtuosos plumb their vast musical experience and respond to what is happening around them.

A student of Lennie Tristano through Tristano’s last decade, Harvey Diamond has performed with NEA Jazz Masters Sheila Jordan, Dave Liebman, and Art Farmer, and also with many other great musicians including Charles Neville, Herb Pomeroy, Harvie S, John Scofield, John Abercrombie, George Mraz, Jay Clayton, Joe Hunt, Don Alias, Billy Drummond, Francisco Mela, Jason Palmer, Cameron Brown, Marc Johnson, and Marcus McLaurine. Bassist, composer and educator Cameron Brown began his career in the mid-sixties, recording in Europe with George Russell and Don Cherry. These important innovators remain life-long inspirations and influences. Beginning in 1975, Mr. Brown anchored some of the most important ensembles of the seventies, eighties, nineties, and into the current century. Sheila Jordan, Roswell Rudd, Archie Shepp and Beaver Harris were other early mentors and bandleaders. He has enjoyed special relationships with master drummers: Art Blakey, Dannie Richmond, Philly Joe Jones, Edward Blackwell, Eddie Moore, Idris Muhammad, Billy Hart, Lewis Nash and Matt Wilson as well as Mr. Harris. The Don Pullen/George Adams Quartet, featuring Dannie Richmond, developed into an intense and rewarding partnership which lasted nearly ten years. In addition to this quartet, Beaver Harris’s 360 Degree Music Experience, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the Sextet and Big Bands of George Russell, the Dannie Richmond Quintet, the Dewey Redman Quartet, and various ensembles led be Mr. Shepp, Mr. Cherry, Mr. Rudd, Don Byron and Joe Lovano, Mr. Brown has performed and/or recorded with Donald Byrd, Booker Ervin, Ted Curson, Lee Konitz, Chet Baker, Terumasa Hino, Marco Tamburini, Betty Carter, Houston Person, Etta Jones, Ben Riley, Lou Donaldson, Jim McNeely, George Cables, Joe Locke, Salvatore Bonafede, Tony Malaby, Jeremy Steig, and Marc Copland.

Drummer Francisco Mela is a favorite among jazz’s best performers including Chucho Valdés, Joe Lovano, Kenny Barron and McCoy Tyner. Born in 1968 in Bayamo, Cuba, Mela moved to Boston in 2000 to attend Berklee College of Music, where he now teaches. Since then he has become an integral part of Joe Lovano’s quartet, McCoy Tyner’s trio, and Kenny Barron’s trio, and has expanded his vision as a bandleader. In addition he has worked with Esperanza Spaulding, Lionel Loueke, Joanne Brackeen, Jane Bunnett, Anat Cohen, and many others. Mela has released four albums as a leader, all receiving positive critical acclaim. Mela has recently joined Boston’s venerable trio The Fringe. He has also been working with rising star Kris Davis.
