Come join us for an unforgettable evening as Dan Dutton performs his mesmerizing Songs of Experience. This in-person event will be held at The Härth Room, a cozy venue perfect for intimate performances. Get ready to be swept away by Dan’s soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics.

About this event

This set of songs evokes images and emotions from a half-century of travel and music composition. The variety of themes and harmonic resonances create a narrative that invites the listener into reveries of the heart and mind. Ancient myths spring to life in unexpectedly contemporary places; a ghost appears in a Paris club, a bear dreams of the alchemy of honey, and an old woman chants a spell in a snowy forest. On this journey of dreams, Dutton’s singing and sensitive piano playing are supported and enhanced by bassist Brent Olds, Erick Titiana on viola, and Gay Begley’s interwoven clarinets. Intermingled with the original lyrics are musical settings of the poetry of Ovid, Keats, Blake, and Shakespeare.

Kentuckian Dan Dutton – a visual artist, composer, and director – grew up singing traditional ballads learned from his parents, followed by an amazing list of mentors, including 3 National Heritage Award winners; “Queen of American Folk Music “Jean Ritchie, North Carolina balladeers Chapel, Doug, and Berzilla Wallin, and Cherokee Elder Walker Calhoun. In 1990, Kentucky Opera and the Louisville Orchestra premiered The Stone Man, a jazz-influenced opera, followed in the years to come by eight more; – The Secret Commonwealth, a cycle of 4 operas; Ballads of the Barefoot Mind; The Faun; You’ll Always Come Back; and Aunt Lou; (the Witch). In 2023, Dutton completed his first symphony and began work on Songs of Experience – a jazz song cycle and a string quartet.

Dan has a history with Cincinnati, showing visual art in the city during the 80s and 90s and working as a Rookwood artist-in-residence for 4 years in the early aughts.
