Join renowned horticulturalist, Sean Hogan, for a tour of his private garden, Rancho Cistus, at Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island.

Join Oregon APLD at Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island for a tour of renowned designer and horticulturist Sean Hogan’s private garden. Rancho Cistus features plants that Sean has collected from far and wide across the globe and tested in our region for climate resilience.

A crevice garden dubbed “Sky Islands” highlights regional plants from areas like the Great Basin, Mojave Desert, and South Africa. Sean will guide us through his mostly xeric tapestry of plants, rich with less commonly available west coast native plant species, an abundance of evergreen oaks (a favorite genus among cultivation at Cistus), and plenty of zone denial curiosities. What’s the fun of gardening if you’re not living on the edge a little?

End the tour with a visit to the retail nursery where your tour admission gets you a 20% discount for the day. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to the establishment of Portland Botanical Garden, which Sean Hogan is spearheading as the executive director.

Our tour will take place from 11am-12pm, with a 45 minute tour and Q&A afterward. Shop before or after the event with a 20% discount included with your admission.

Cistus Design Nursery is open from 10-5.

Sean Hogan

Sean Hogan is a renowned horticulturist, plant collector, garden design consultant, and author of titles such as Flora: a Gardener’s Encyclopedia and Trees for All Seasons: Broadleaved Evergreens for Temperate Climates. Previously the curator for the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, Sean moved back to Oregon and opened Cistus Design Nursery in 2000, a beloved nursery that challenges the conventional norms of landscape plants with a focus on bioregional and climate adapted plants. Sean is spearheading the establishment of Portland Botanical Garden as the Executive Director.
