Workshop Description

Fiber artist Marty Warfel will introduce techniques and guide participants through the process of hand painting on silk with dye. Each participant will paint their own design on a silk handkerchief.

Participants are encouraged to bring reference images, books and other inspirations! We also suggest bringing personal brushes; please note that the fiber reactive dyes utilized in the workshop can stain natural brush fibers. Headphones to listen to personal audio while working are welcome.

Materials Provided at Happy Gallery

  • Nitrile Gloves
  • 11” White 8mm Silk Habotai handkerchief
  • Paint Brushes
  • Pencils
  • Dye supplies

Access Information

The following chemicals will be utilized in the dying process:

  • Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes
  • Sodium Alginate Thickener (dried, ground kelp-seaweed)
  • Soda Ash Fixer (pure dense sodium carbonate)
  • Jacquard No-Flow Primer
  • Urea
  • Water

The gallery is street level and ADA accessible. There is one step up to the gallery’s restroom.

Masks are required for this indoor event. There will be some masks available onsite.

Meet Marty Warfel  

Marty is a queer nonbinary artist based in Chicago. Their work crosses many mediums, and explores themes of pattern, texture, repetition, play, topography, decomposition, re-use, and cosmic interconnectivity. They are currently working with textiles, fibers, and dyes, specifically focusing on silk. About Happy Gallery 

Happy Gallery is a queer, artist-run gallery and studio space in a repurposed storefront located in Humboldt Park, Chicago. The gallery focuses on exhibiting emerging artists from its community and beyond, as well as hosting music and community events. 

Art After Work is a series of hands-on artmaking workshops facilitated by Chicago-based artists. Every month participants are invited to explore new inventive ways to use common, inexpensive and salvaged materials to create your own unique work of art. Each workshop is designed for you to connect with your creativity and each other!
