EXPERIENCE

The museum is known for its collection of Cobra art, including works by Karel Appel, Constant and Corneille, but it also offers a home to contemporary art and Panorama Schiedam, a permanent exhibition on the history of the city.

The collection of the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam consists of more than 15,000 objects. There are 8,000 historical objects that tell us something about the city history of Schiedam. The other 7,000 objects are modern works of art, from 1947 to the present.

The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam was founded in 1899 and has been housed in the national monument Sint Jacobsgasthuis since 1941. This guest house was built in 1787 and it stands on the site of an even older guest house that was founded around 1547 by Countess Aleida of Hainaut. Until 1934, the building provided shelter for poor elderly people and this function can be read from the floor plan: in the center of the building is a large chapel with a wing on either side. The left wing was used as a men’s wing and the right as a women’s wing.

So come and discover art, be inspired, enjoy a cup of coffee, meet friends or even create something yourself. You may enjoy a moment of happiness, or you may find that it’s not for you. Either way, everyone is welcome.
