London : Westminster Abbey : The Royal Church Tour - London, United Kingdom
  • Anywhere

EXPERIENCE:

The building we’ll be visiting is almost 800 years old, but bits and pieces of an even older church can be found while walking inside. Westminster Abbey is a very special place, it has been supported by English monarchs since the 10th century. The first coronation in the Abbey was that of William the Conquerer in 1066, but we don’t call him that in London, for us he is William I, first Norman king of England.
During our visit you’ll be standing on the spot where William I and almost all the successive Kings of England were crowned. The Abbey became a Royal mausoleum when King Edward the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England was buried here in 1065 and you will see his magnificent tomb as well as the tombs, burials and memorials of many other famous and infamous people.
The Abbey has very close relationship with our Royal Family, coronations and royal weddings are still happening here and the ancient 13th century Coronation Chair, which you are going to see, still serves every time the monarch is crowned.
We will talk about how English gothic architecture developed across the centuries and I can guarantee that you are going to see one of the most breathtaking gothic ceilings in the world.
After visiting the Abbey you will not only learn a lot about English history, but perhaps you will understand both this country and its people better.
