EXPERIENCE

During this walk, you will get to know the old Jewish quarter. Your guide René studied history and he is a specialis in Jewish Amsterdam. The city of Amsterdam has a very rich Jewish history. At the end of the 17th century, numerous Portuguese and Spanish Jews came to Amsterdam due to the religious freedom present in Holland. Additionally, many Eastern European Jews also arrived in Amsterdam, fleeing from pogroms, finding a safe haven here. Amsterdam was often referred to as the Jerusalem of the West. These Jewish communities made significant contributions to the city in the fields of science and trade. The Jewish quarter is still marked by a large number of buildings reminiscent of their presence, including two major synagogues and several impressive diamond factories.

At its peak, the Jewish population reached 70,000, accounting for over 10% of Amsterdam’s population. However, after the horrors of the Second World War, only 10,000 Jews remained in Amsterdam, and the concept of a Jewish quarter had disappeared. The guided tour will narrate and explain the history from the 1600s to the present day.
