American reggae band Big Mountain brought a very commercialized version of Jamaican music to the American mainstream when their cover of Peter Frampton’s Baby, I Love Your Way reached the Top Ten in early 1994. To the bands credit, though, its three albums contain reggae roots music combined with only several Rs band and the Soul Syndicate. Big Mountain were originally formed in San Diego as the Rainbow Warriors. After several years of dizzying lineup changes and two name changes — first to Shiloh and finally to Big Mountain — the group settled around vocalist/guitarist Quino, with rhythm guitarist Jerome Cruz, drummers Gregory Blakney and Lance Rhodes, keyboard player Manfred Reinke, and bassist Lynn Copeland. That lineup released Wake Up on the Quality label in 1992 and charted Touch My Light early the following year. The single reached number 51 in America, but only one year later Big Mountain began to experiment with several different guitarists.
Fully Fullwood-A truly well-earned recognition as being one of “the Greats” of the music industry, deeply creative and positively innovative. Fully Fullwood is one of the most popular and well-known bass players in the world and has worked and recorded with every major artist out of Jamaica. His list of credits reads like a who’s-who of the twentieth century’s most important musical artists
Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Michael Rose, Mikey Dread, The Mighty Diamonds, Black Uhuru, Joe Higgs, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Frankie Paul, Big Youth, U-Roy, Sister Carol, John Holt, Judy Mowatt, Ken Boothe, Andrew Tosh, Delroy Wilson, and many more have utilized the outstanding talents of this absolutely amazing composer, producer and musician. The originator and leader of the “Soul Syndicate Band,” Fully Fullwood has the distinction of also being a member of reggae superstar Peter Tosh’s famous band, “Word, Sound and Power” whom he recorded with and also toured with extensively.
Reggae rockers Dubbest (pronounced duh-best) formed in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. As friends in high school, guitarist Andrew MacKenzie, singer/melodica player Ryan Thaxter, bassist Sean Craffey, guitarist Cory Mahoney, and drummer Kyle Hancock shared a love of pop-punk and ska, bonding over bands like Black Flag, until they caught wind of Augustus Pablo’s 1974 dub classic Ital Dub.
In 2016, Dubbest moved out of New England and relocated to San Diego, CA. With a new home and a fresh perspective, the band wasted no time entrenching themselves in the Southern Californian reggae scene. That same year, they opened for the legendary Wailers at the iconic Belly Up, and subsequently released the live album “Live at the Belly Up”.
Dubbest released their eagerly awaited third album “Gold Fever” in 2019. Coming out of the pandemic, the band jumped right back into playing shows and festivals (now as a four-piece) with the likes of Barrington Levy, The Expanders, John Brown’s Body, Passafire and Arise Roots. In fall 2022, Dubbest toured the US in support of KBong (of Stick Figure fame), and they co-released a single “Love is a Celebration” In summer 2023, the band announced a GoFundMe to help fund their highly anticipated new album, as well as a massive US tour supporting Fortunate Youth. To tide fans over, Dubbest released a new single “Right Your Wrongs” featuring Iya Terra, and a dub version “Dub Your Wrongs” again produced by Dubfader.
