Spring Break Jazz Guitar Bootcamp! at Milwaukie School of Guitar – Milwaukie, OR

The Jazz Skills Bootcamp is a 5-day intensive program designed to give young guitarists an introduction to the fundamentals of playing Jazz in a group setting, and develop the skills necessary to explore and appreciate this uniquely challenging and rewarding musical genre. This program will also serve as a primer to other jazz-centric programs and student ensembles that we hope to offer moving forward.

While primarily intended for our enrolled students, this event is open to the general public who meet the required criteria for age and experience. (More details below).

The five sessions will take place from 6:00-7:30 PM from Monday, March 24th through Friday, March 29th. Private lessons are cancelled for the week, so enrolled students do not need to worry about conflicts with their lesson schedule.

We do need a minimum number of participants to make this program viable, so the class will only move forward if that threshold is met by March 8th.

Major Learning Objectives:

• Learn to play the 5 basic “jazz chords”
• Memorize the notes on the 6th and 5th strings of the guitar
• Develop a strong sense of rhythm
• Learn the basic of scales and arpeggios, and how to implement their use
• Develop active listening habits

Don’t be intimidated – all the chord shapes taight in this program are easier than the dreaded “F” chord! If you can strum through open chords without pausing, you’ll do just fine!

Student Requirements:

Participants must be local middle or high school (or homeschool) students between ages 13-17.

Students must provide their own guitar. Acoustic guitar is preferred, but electric guitar is acceptable if the student brings a small amp and maintains a respectful volume.

Students must know how to tune their own guitar, read chord diagrams, and be comfortable transitioning between basic common chord shapes quickly and smoothly. The ability to read sheet music is not required.
