Nelu Lazar is a Romanian-American singer-songwriter, producer, co-founder of acoustic & rock bands, prosodic book writer – time permitting, since the ’90s. Nelu’s vocal interpretation is mesmerizing and his audience is always enthralled when he plays acoustic guitar – and some cobza – versions of traditional fiddling, world romani, alternative folk, folk-rock, grunge, punk, and rock genres, including his original songs from his albums, and folk and rock operas he released so far – and some surprises for each unique audience and each distinctive show. Nelu Lazar started with music in the ‘90s and since then has performed on tours in Romania, Moldova, and United States, and had stage experiences in some exotic places like the Galàpagos, Caribbean seas, and in Transylvania near the Carpathian Mountains. Nelu Lazar has quite a few active music projects/bands and live music shows: Nelu Lazar (solo), Taine Folk, The Rèmmotes, Mirror’97, Nelu Lazar & Sounds of Romania, and Nelu Lazar & the Black Sea Vallachs, as well as live show productions including a version of a well-known rock opera from the ‘70s that Nelu has translated entirely and prosodically in Romanian and has licensed to produce a first show in Chicago soon. Nelu Lazar is also the author of the book and rock opera The Seasons’ Journey soon to be published as a music album, as well as the author of the poems book and the folk opera “din vremuri de departe, din vremuri de demult” (“of times from afar, of times from ages”) that he published in 2023.

Sofia Bele, an 11 years old artist member of Romanian-American Choir of Chicago (Corul Româno-American Chicago), was born and lives in the United States but keeps her Romanian roots alive through music. Her passion for music started at a young age, and since the age of 8 she has been studying voice with the beloved teacher, mezzo-soprano Nicoleta Roman. Sofia’s talent and hard work were recognized last year when she won an award at the Lira Music Festival in Romania. This year in 2024, Sofia became a member of the National Children’s Chorus, with which she had the great honor of performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. For several years, Sofia has enthusiastically participated in all the events organized by the Romanian-American Choir of Chicago. She has been involved in numerous musical video projects, both solo and as part of the children’s ensemble, singing at various events, Romanian and Moldovan festivals. The most unique and special moment was her performance of the Romanian National Anthem at the international rugby match between Romania and the USA. On December 22 at Stan Mansion, Sofia will delight the audience with her voice, paying tribute to Romanian culture and sharing her joy of singing to the audience. The songs you will hear were composed especially for her by Maestro Călin Ionce, the musical director of the Baia Mare Revue Theater.

Corina Vlad is an artist passionate about music and poetry, shaping her unique identity in the artistic world. An active member of Cenaclul Retro, Corina finds inspiration in musical notes and meaningful words. She has transformed this passion into writing, becoming the author of the poetry book “Trăiri în Focuri Vii” (“Living Flames of Emotion”). With an exuberant and enthusiastic nature, Corina brings emotion and depth, leaving her mark on the cultural landscape.

ȘEZĂTOAREA CHICAGO
(Romanian Blouse Sewing Circle from Chicago)

Șezătoarea Chicago was founded in 2019. The idea was inspired by the movement created by Andreea Diana Tănăsescu – founder of La Blouse Roumaine – and by the virtual sewing circles that emerged in various cities across the country.

On June 23, 2019, an invitation was extended to everyone present at the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse event (organized under the auspices of the Authentic Society for Language and Romanian Culture, Stan Mansion, and RUF – Romanian United Fund) to join a project that celebrates authentic Romanian traditions and the joy of being together, reviving the old idea of the șezătoare (traditional sewing circle).

The first meeting of Șezătoarea Chicago took place on July 20, 2019. It opened a door through which entered, alongside the women, light, love, understanding, confusion, and a desire for discovery. There was a lot of energy and a strong Romanian spirit in the hearts of those present, along with curiosity and interest in embarking on the journey of creating hand-stitched blouses. The biggest challenge was not, and still isn’t, the lack of sewing skills, but rather staying consistent and keeping an open heart and mind, as the blouses are “playful.”
