Don’t miss this upcoming Event In Honolulu, HI. Happening on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at . Doors open at 10:00 AM.

Level: Beginner

This workshop will provide an introduction to building combat robots, similar to the ones from the TV shows BattleBots or Robot Wars. Combat robots are radio-controlled machines that fit under a weight limit, generally use wheels, and are meant to disable other robots in matches in an enclosed arena. We will be doing kit builds for the 1 lb plastic ant weight class, which is material-restricted to plastics that can be printed on an inexpensive 3d printer. The 1 lb class is the largest class that the Hawaii arena supports.

The next fighting robot tournament is scheduled for 11/24/24 and will be optional for workshop participants to attend if they’d like. A link with details about this optional event is below and more information will be provided during the workshop.

What You’ll Experience:

You will be assembling 1 of 3 different plastic ant weight kits from Palm Beach Bots:

Plastic Poison – An undercutter, like a mix of Tombstone and Valkyrie
Dead Shaft Delight – A drum spinner, like Copperhead
Super Scooper – A lifter

All the robots have similar electronics, so we will be soldering them together before assembling them. At the end, you will have the option to fight your robot in the arena if you’d like.

Note: We will try to have spare parts on hand, but combat robot fights do result in parts of the robots being broken. It is part of the hobby. Since we will be using kits, replacement parts are available if you ever need to purchase them. Generally, damage is limited to losing a motor, losing a tire, or cracking a 3d printed part. No single part of these robots costs over $20.

You will have the option to take a 30 to 60 minute lunch break during this workshop. Since participants will be working at their own pace for a good portion of this workshop, the timing of this break will be up to you. No food is allowed inside the workshop space. However, there are numerous eateries located within a 10 minute walk or a 3 minute drive from our location.

Robot Choices:

After you purchase your ticket, please reach out no later than 6/20/24 to info@hnltoollibrary.org with your choice of robot (choices can be found by viewing the Fighting Robot Choices Document in the link below). We will make every attempt to provide your choice, as long as the manufacturer has it in stock. If it is not in stock, a different option will be selected for you. If you sign up for this workshop after 6/20/24 or if you don’t send us your robot choice before then, you will be able to choose your robot from what we have available on the day of the workshop.
