The Kentucky Derby is an event that is held every year on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. First run in 1875, this race is the oldest continuously held sporting event in America. It is also the first leg of the Triple Crown, which includes the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Over the last half century, thirteen horses have managed to win the Triple Crown, among them Secretariat in 1973, Seattle Slew in 1977, Affirmed in 1978, American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018. The winner of the Kentucky Derby, a race for three-year-old horses, is awarded a garland of red roses and the owner receives a cash prize of $1.86 million in 2019. This tradition of giving roses began in 1896, which is why Bill Corum famously dubbed the race the Running for the Roses in 1925. Some of the most notable jockeys in Kentucky Derby history include Victor Espinoza, Calvin Borel, Gary Stevens and William Shoemaker. Get your tickets for the Kentucky Derby at StubHub.
