Explore the world of mezcal in Santiago Matatlán. Visit family-owned distilleries, taste premium mezcals, and learn about traditional production methods.

EXPERIENCE:

Embark on a fascinating journey to Santiago Matatlán, the “World Capital of Mezcal,” located just an hour’s drive from Oaxaca City. This tour offers a deep dive into the rich culture, production, and traditions of mezcal, an agave spirit that has seen a surge in popularity. Begin your adventure at Casa de las Bugambilias B&B, from where you’ll travel southeast on the Pan-American Highway 190 to Matatlán.

Your first stop will be at family-owned palenques, where you’ll witness the traditional methods of mezcal production, from harvesting the agave plant to distillation using clay pots and copper stills. Unlike commercial distilleries, these small-scale producers offer an authentic glimpse into artisanal mezcal making. Enjoy free tastings of a variety of premium mezcals, including Espadín, Cuishe, Madrecuishe, Tobalá, Tepextate, and more. There’s no pressure to buy, but you’ll have the opportunity to purchase certified mezcal directly from the producers.

Next, visit agave plantations to learn about the farmers who cultivate these plants. You’ll also get to taste pulque, a traditional beverage made from the fermented sap of the giant agave Salmiana, along with agua miel. The tour concludes with a delicious lunch at a traditional restaurant in Santiago Matatlán, where you can savor the local cuisine. After lunch, you’ll return to Oaxaca City.
