Hoonah: Icy Strait Village Tour and Crab Feast – Alaska, Alaska
Indulge in freshly caught Alaskan crab on a guided village tour. See how we live and eat well on our remote wilderness island.
EXPERIENCE:
Let us tell you a little secret: It’s nearly impossible to find fresh crab in Alaska!
We are very fortunate to live near the crabbing grounds and own a permit to harvest crab. This allows us to offer fresh crab along with Srisa’s locally famous Thai fried rice.
Explore and learn about local village life from actual Alaskans in a small group van tour, then feast over the water on freshly caught dungeness crab.
Start by meeting your guide at the cruise ship dock (Icy Strait Point). From there, it’s a short drive to our beautifully restored Beach House, where we will stop briefly to pull the crab trap out of the water and pick out lunch!
After the crab have been iced down we head to our garden in the forest. This is where we grow some of the ingredients for the fried rice and special seafood sauce. We will show you how we produce a lot of our own food and building supplies, and how barter, trade, and upcycling are important here on the island.
Next stop is the carving shed to watch our master wood carving friends craft a traditional totem pole from an Alaskan yellow cedar log.
The tour concludes back at the Beach House, where we cook up the fresh crab and have a crab and Thai food feast. Don’t forget to try the wild Alaskan berry dessert.
