Raleigh’s African American community has produced educators, engineers, political leaders, medical scientists, military officers, and much more.
EXPERIENCE:
The walking tour will take you between various historic sites created by or important to Raleigh’s African American community. We start off on East Hargett Street, Raleigh’s historic “Black Main Street” and see two of the buildings there, the Hamlin Building and Delaney Building. From there, we will move to our next destination: East Davie Presbyterian Church, an impressive building which served an important political role in the community while serving as the magnum opus of one of Raleigh’s most famous black architects. Finally, we will move onto Cabarrus Street, and see the former site of Dove Music Store and the Lincoln Theater.
