Shudder To Think has carved out a sound that is as ambitious as it is unclassifiable. They emerged as one of the seminal bands from the Washington, D.C. punk/post-hardcore scene of the late 1980s and early 90s, with the original lineup singer Craig Wedren, bassist Stuart Hill, drummer Mike Russell, and guitarist Chris Matthews releasing their first few groundbreaking albums on D.C.s legendary Dischord Records. After a lineup change that brought drummer Adam Wade (Jawbox) and guitarist Nathan Larson into the fold, the band broke with the underground ethos of the era and signed to Epic Records/Sony. They released Pony Express Record in 1994 – widely considered to be one of the most adventurous and singular rock albums of the 1990s, and which continues to confound and inspire artists and listeners to this day. The relatively sunny 50,000 B.C. followed in 1997, recorded with new drummer Kevin March (Guided By Voices).By the late-90s, Shudder To Think shifted their focus to making music for film. They wrote, performed, and produced songs and scores for several iconic films from the burgeoning NYC indie film scene of the time including Jesse Peretzs First Love, Last Rites featuring collaborations with Jeff Buckley, Liz Phair, Billy Corgan, and more; Lisa Cholodenkos High Art; and Todd Haynes Velvet Goldmine. By the end of the decade, the band decided to go on indefinite hiatus with a few performances sprinkled over the next quarter century. For the first time in over a decade, Shudder to Think has decided to un-hit pause and began performing and making new music again in Spring 2025. Look for shows and a new album from the band, which now features the return of Adam Wade on drums and the additions of composer Jherek Bischoff on bass and producer/multi-instrumentalist Clint Walsh on guitar.
