PIPES: Stephen Tharp at Trinity Church – New York, NY

The formidable Stephen Tharp, one of the preeminent soloists in the United States today, highlights the impressive range of Trinity’s magnificent new organ with a program of breathtaking beauty and daring innovation. Manipulating the instrument’s vast sonic array, which can emulate the many instruments of an orchestra, Tharp performs his own transcriptions of Franz Liszt’s Totentanz and Joseph Jongen’s virtuoso final movement of the Symphonie Concertante, as well as an adaptation of Richard Wagner’s Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. The centerpiece of the evening is Tharp’s thrilling adaptation of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring — arguably the most groundbreaking work of the 20th century — which will showcase the new organ’s full power and gamut of colors.
