Course Description: This seminar reviews and analyzes selected significant changes in the 2021 edition of the International Building Code (IBC). The 2021 IBC forms the basis of the new 2021 Michigan Building Code (MBC) coming effective in early April 2025. Although the focus of the presentation is on revisions to the IBC fire- and life-safety provisions, additional areas of discussion include accessibility, construction materials and building services. The seminar assists building officials, fire officials, plans examiners, inspectors and design professionals in identifying the specific code changes that have occurred and understanding the reasoning behind the changes. The program is based on the ICC publication Significant Changes to the International Building Code, 2021 Edition.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the differences between selected nonstructural provisions of the 2018 IBC and the 2021 edition.
- Determine if the change is an addition, deletion, modification or clarification.
- Identify changes in format and technical requirements.
- Explain the intent and application of the changes.
