HISTORY FACTS:
The djembe, a goblet-shaped hand drum,originated in West Africa with the Mandinka people around the 12th century, with its name derived from the Bambara phrase “Anke djé, anke bé” meaning “everyone gather in peace”. Historically created by the blacksmith caste (Numu) for iron smelting, the djembe’s use expanded beyond the Numu caste to become an integral part of community life, accompanying dances, songs, and rituals. The instrument gained worldwide recognition through West African ballet performances and continues to serve as a symbol of unity, communication, and cultural reclamation, particularly for African communities.
