This dinner imagines a return to Charleston’s Bachelor’s Retreat, where Nat Fuller — an enslaved caterer and later a symbol of Black culinary excellence — cooked before and after emancipation. Known for his 1865 Reconstruction-era banquet that brought Black and white Charlestonians to the same table, this meal honors his vision of hospitality as a tool for reconciliation, elegance, and resistance. It’s a speculative tribute rooted in real history and generous imagination.
