BOULEZ AT 100: CELEBRATING HIS LEGACY
This year is the centenary of Pierre Boulez, a unique artist who transformed our music world in myriad ways. Two very different Boulez works reveal disparate styles and periods in his creative output. The early Sonatine (1946) for flute and piano revels in serial complexity and muscular virtuosity; Derive I (1984), one of a series of works where the composer reworks and re-imagines fragments from earlier pieces, deals with ornamentation and contemplative stasis. Jeffrey Mumford’s a garden of flourishing paths is a lithe and lyrical tribute to his teacher Elliott Carter. The concert concludes with James Wood’s, Crying Bird, Echoing Star-a work that explores the composer lifelong fascination with birdsong and astronomy.
