Your Ladies:

ELIZABETH VAN LEW (1818–1900) was a philanthropist, politician, Southern belle, and Union spy. A staunch abolitionist—contrary, impatient, and puritanical by nature—Elizabeth was exhilarated by the opportunities for adventure afforded by the Civil War, and quickly adapted to the ruthless tactics of America’s first modern conflict. She ran what an NSA analyst would later deem “the most productive espionage operation of the war, performed by either side,” in the heart of the Confederate Capital. Yet despite her triumphs, her transformation would cost her almost everything.

TEXAS GUINAN (1884–1933) was an actress, vaudevillian, and the queen of New York’s nightclubs. Born Mary Louise Cecelia Guinan in Waco, she chose “Texas” for herself when starting in show business. She liked “noise, rhinestone heels, customers, plenty of attention and red velvet bathing suits.” She found some success on stage and screen but became an icon when she set the tone of a city and a decade hosting and running speakeasies in New York during Prohibition. Breaking the law may not be for the faint of heart, but that was never a problem for Texas Guinan.

CHRISTINE MILLER (1942–1978) was a member of the Peoples Temple and the only vocal dissenter during the tragic events of the Jonestown Massacre. Born in a small town in Texas, she eventually moved to California joined the Peoples Temple, attracted by its message of social equality and racial justice. She later followed the group to Jonestown, Guyana, where she died.
