In 1898, North Carolina’s biracial, democratically elected government was overthrown by a violent coup d’état. The worst violence took place in the city of Wilmington, culminating in a horrific massacre of hundreds of citizens. It was the first and only time in American history when a coup successfully placed a government into power, and began a period of North Carolina history governed by oppression and racism.
